Download or read book Picturing the Wolf in Children's Literature written by Debra Mitts-Smith and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the villainous beast of “Little Red Riding Hood” and “The Three Little Pigs,” to the nurturing wolves of Romulus and Remus and Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book, the wolf has long been a part of the landscape of children’s literature. Meanwhile, since the 1960s and the popularization of scientific research on these animals, children’s books have begun to feature more nuanced views. In Picturing the Wolf in Children’s Literature, Mitts-Smith analyzes visual images of the wolf in children’s books published in Western Europe and North America from 1500 to the present. In particular, she considers how wolves are depicted in and across particular works, the values and attitudes that inform these depictions, and how the concept of the wolf has changed over time. What she discovers is that illustrations and photos in works for children impart social, cultural, and scientific information not only about wolves, but also about humans and human behavior. First encountered in childhood, picture books act as a training ground where the young learn both how to decode the “symbolic” wolf across various contexts and how to make sense of “real” wolves. Mitts-Smith studies sources including myths, legends, fables, folk and fairy tales, fractured tales, fictional stories, and nonfiction, highlighting those instances in which images play a major role, including illustrated anthologies, chapbooks, picture books, and informational books. This book will be of interest to children’s literature scholars, as well as those interested in the figure of the wolf and how it has been informed over time.

But their damned justice cost me my freedom, my family, my club, and the only woman I ever wanted ... Ava. Now I’m back. Only two things have kept me sane all these years. I want to hurt the man responsible for sending me to prison and end his hold over the Great Wolves M.C. forever. And I want the feel of Ava’s body beneath mine again. I need to watch the way she surrenders only to me and makes me whole. It’s selfish of me to think Ava would wait for me. But, I’m a selfish man and it’s time for me to take back what’s mine. Sly Outlaws. That’s all the Great Wolves M.C. were ever supposed to be. But that’s the thinking of a lost generation and I’ve finally brought my club out of the darkness. We’re headed for a brighter future and it only cost me my soul. A small price to pay until I met Scarlett. She came out of nowhere to stir my body and blood. Her dark yearnings equal mine. I can’t get enough. I know she’s hiding something from me and before I’m through, I mean to make her bare everything to me...her body, her heart and her secrets. Because she doesn’t realize she’s met her match. Gunn Like every member of the Great Wolves M.C., I paid for the privilege to wear this patch in blood. My best friend Scotty paid for it with his life. With his dying breath, he made me swear to watch out for his mom and little sister, Brenna. That was seven years ago and I’ve kept my distance but done my best. Until Brenna walked into my clubhouse and turned my world upside down. She’s all grown up with curves that don’t quit. I know I can’t have her. I know I shouldn’t even look, let alone touch. I warned her to stay away from me. But, she’s as stubborn as she is tempting and I want to make her mine no matter how many rules I have to break. Angel My road name has nothing to do with my looks, no matter what women think. I earned it taking a bullet for my Prez and I’d do it again. Soon enough, I may have to. There’s a club war on the horizon and my mission is clear when that day comes. I’ll bleed and die for this brotherhood. It’s too dangerous to let anyone get close to me. Then, Maura walked into my club and spun my heart. Tough. Smart. Classy. But, she needs my protection even if she’s too stubborn to see it. And I need to make her mine, no matter what it costs. Switch When my old man turned rat, the club should have turned their back on me. They didn’t. They took me in and gave me a life. Now, in the middle of a club war, I was willing to give it back to protect my brothers. An easy choice, until I met Kitt. I’ve never wanted anything as much as I want her. Her lips. Those curves. But more than that, she’s got her broken parts and secrets, just like me. She tries to hide them but that only makes me want her more. Only my gut is telling me her secrets could get one of us killed. The year is 2600 AD or 419 B.O.M. Although Meredith knows the fate of Avis and Ernest but what they saw and suffered would shake you to the core. This novel is a prophetic dystopia that is said to have inspired George Orwell, the author of 1984, who described Jack London as having made "a very remarkable prophecy of the rise of Fascism". Orwell believed that Jack London's understanding of contemporary politics had made him a better prophet "than many better-informed and more logical thinkers." Jack London (1876–1916) was an American novelist, journalist, and social activist. London was part of the radical literary group "The Crowd" in San Francisco and a passionate advocate of unionization, socialism, and the rights of workers. He wrote several powerful works dealing with these topics, such as his dystopian novel The Iron Heel, his non-fiction exposé The People of the Abyss, and The War of the Classes. Some of his most famous works include The Call of the Wild and White Fang, both set in the Klondike Gold Rush, as well as the short stories "To Build a Fire", "An Odyssey of the North", and "Love of Life". He also wrote of the South Pacific in such stories as "The Pearls of Parlay" and "The Heathen", and of the San Francisco Bay area in The Sea Wolf.
